Why your face is reacting to what's happening in your Gut - a Mamamia Podcast

Recently, I was honoured to be invited onto Mamamia, Australia's leading podcast for women. I was asked to talk about a subject that has fascinated me for decades—how our bodies are designed to heal adapt and thrive when we understand what they're trying to tell us.

After more than 40 years in clinical practice it was a privilege to be interviewed as one of Australia's leading voices in the Microbiome Gut and Skin connection.

More importantly, it was an opportunity to share an important message … that lasting health begins by understanding the body from the inside out.

This interview however came with an unexpected challenge.

The wonderful Mamamia team asked me to leave much of the science behind and simply explain the concepts in a way anyone could understand. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love the science! I could happily spend hours talking about the gut microbiome, inflammation, hormones and the extraordinary way every system in the body communicates with another.

But it reminded me of something important. Knowledge only has value if people can understand it and use it.

If we can make complex health information feel simple, practical and empowering, then people are far more likely to make meaningful changes.

I've shared a couple of short highlights and below the full interview. The original conversation ran for around 22 minutes and has been edited into an easy-to-experience 9½-minute episode.

If there's one message I'd love people to take away, it's this: Our bodies are rarely working against us—they're communicating with us.

Symptoms are often the final chapter of a story that began much earlier.

When we learn to look beyond the symptom and understand the whole person, we give ourselves the greatest opportunity for long-term health and wellbeing.

If your a current patient, a past patient or we are yet to meet, I hope something in here resonates with you.

A heartfelt thank you to Executive Producer Grace Rouvray and the entire Mamamia team for making me feel so welcome and for creating such a thoughtful, enjoyable conversation.

It was an absolute pleasure.
