What happens in a personalised skin consultation ?

Understanding your unique skin concerns and your most appropriate next steps including tips to improve barrier function all year round.

You may have noticed that you haven't heard from me lately about the Regenerative skin options I support and I wanted to explain why.

Over more than 10 years working in Regenerative Skin and Hair health, including training in London, Paris, as well as researching in South Korea, I've watched the rules around how medical practitioners communicate change considerably.

Since early 2025, The Medical Boards and AHPRA set strict rules for how practitioners communicate about procedures. These rules exist to protect you. They help prevent unrealistic expectations and pressure to buy, and they make sure treatment decisions are made with a qualified practitioner who knows your health history, not in response to marketing and packaged offerings.

Non-medical skin and beauty clinics are regulated differently, so you may see them share more about their services including photography and special offers.

I agree with the intent of these rules. Cosmetic and regenerative treatments are medical decisions, and they deserve a proper conversation. I'll admit it makes it harder to share everything that's possible with the right approach. That's exactly what a consultation is for.

I've chosen to communicate less, and carefully, rather than risk saying the wrong thing. I'm writing today to share a little about my approach and how we can work together.

At Gut Skin Clinic, I view skin as a reflection of what's happening beneath the surface. A language of communication that sometimes shouts loudly for attention !

As skin matures, changes in texture, tone and volume often reflect deeper shifts in nutritional status, metabolism, inflammation and tissue repair.

This is why my aesthetic work sits alongside my Functional and Nutritional Medicine practice, including Microbiome and Metabolic health.

Skin is living tissue, influenced by age and genetics, certainly, but also by nutrition, metabolic health, hormones, environmental exposure, lifestyle and the cumulative stresses we place upon the body. I don't believe skin ageing can be understood simply by looking at a wrinkle or outer layer and deciding what to put into it no matter how fancy the machine.

My regenerative approach therefore begins with understanding the person before planning the treatment and a deep knowledge of the structures within.

1. We start with your health story

Before considering any regenerative treatment, I take a detailed medical history, including medications, previous procedures and relevant family history.

Genetics inevitably influence how we age — our facial structure, skin characteristics and some of the patterns we inherit — but they are only part of the picture.

I want to understand your skin within the context of you.

2. We look at the fuel — and the rhythm — of your life

What are you eating?

How varied is your diet? where are your sources of quality protein, essential fats, antioxidants, polyphenols and micronutrients ?

Equally importantly, how are you living?

Sleep, stress and self talk, movement, alcohol, smoking, sun exposure and the pace of everyday life can all contribute to the environment in which skin is being asked to maintain and repair itself.

For me, this is where skin health and Functional Medicine naturally meet.

3. We assess how your face is actually ageing

Facial ageing is far more sophisticated than simply “losing collagen.”

I assess both intrinsic ageing — the biological changes occurring with time — and extrinsic ageing, including environmental and lifestyle influences.

We look at skin quality and texture, hydration, clarity and pigmentation, but also the deeper architecture of the ageing face: proportions, vectors, tissue layers and structural support.

The aim is to understand what has changed, where it has changed and what may be appropriate to address — rather than simply adding volume. This is never about changing you !!! its about maintaining a softness and natural beauty in your facial structures that represent how you see yourself and helps you feel good about that.

4. We document your skin

Clinical photographs allow us to look carefully and objectively at your starting point.

Sometimes what concerns you most is not necessarily what I see as the priority — and sometimes subtle changes in skin quality are more important than treating an isolated “line.”

This becomes a conversation rather than a prescription.

5. We talk about what you actually want

Perhaps the most important part of the consultation is listening.

What bothers you? What doesn't?

How much change would feel right for you?

What are you absolutely not interested in?

We discuss realistic expectations and whether regenerative treatment is appropriate at all. Sometimes the right recommendation is to treat less, to treat differently, or not to treat yet. I may not be the right practitioner for you.

6. Then we build your plan

Only after that assessment do I formulate a personalised skin and regenerative plan.

Where appropriate, I explain the regenerative treatment options I believe are relevant, why I am considering them, their limitations and risks, the anticipated treatment sequence and full transparency on associated costs.

There should be no pressure and no surprises.

You leave with an understanding of your skin, the changes I can see, what may be contributing to them, and the options available to you.

For me, that is the value of a comprehensive skin consultation.

It isn't about walking through the door and being sold a procedure.

It is about taking the time to understand the person who owns the skin — and developing a thoughtful, medically informed plan around them.

Let's talk

If you'd like to explore whether a regenerative approach suits you, I'd welcome you to book a consultation.

I set aside 1¼ hours for each entry skin consultation, because understanding your skin means understanding you, your goals, and what makes your situation unique. Together we'll go through the options available, what results may be realistic for you, and the risks and recovery involved. At consultation I have a wealth of resources and photos to share with you.

This entry consultation fee is $350. There's no obligation to proceed with any treatment, and the consultation is valuable in its own right as a detailed assessment of your skin and overall health.

You will be offered a credit towards your next appointment or products discussed at the time.

Every procedure carries risks, and results vary from person to person. Before you decide on any treatment, you may wish to seek a second opinion from another appropriately qualified health practitioner.

“Skin is not just a protective barrier, it is your outward presentation to the world…. a dynamic organ that plays multiple crucial roles in both your physical and emotional health.”

My tips to help improve skin moisture elasticity and barrier function…….. all year round.

  • Always drink from glass, not plastic, educate your family.

  • Develop a twice daily simple skin routine at 5 mins max.

  • Learn to mix it up, skin gets used to the same products all the time. Like flexing a muscle, lightly stressing the skin is good for it.

  • Over consumption of alcohol has dehydrating properties.

  • Over exercise, for some it can become a skin stressor and fat pads that cushion and provide structural and contour support may start to shift with lasting consequences.

  • Coffee, enjoy 1-2 cups max per day.

  • Hyaluronic concentrated gel, apply often especially under eyes and on lips is a super moisture boost for all ages.

  • Learn how to stimulate your Vagus Nerve and improve parasympathetic tone. This is a subject I will happily discuss with you as this “softens” your nervous system, tissues and improves healthy blood flow to skin and hair. “Cortisol skin and hair” is just as pervasive as “Cortisol belly”.

  • Understand your unique microbiome and work towards a healthy and less inflammatory bacterial population supportive of skin, hair and whole body health.

  • Regular application of a mineral based, NOT chemical sunscreen all year round.

  • Excess sugar and alcohol can leave “AGE” spots on your skin, “Advanced Glycation End” products that is literally tissue RUST.
